First Day of School

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Brady's first day of school was today and he was super excited. All he talked about all summer was that he was going to be in the FOUR year old class. He was very bummed after meet the teacher night that he couldn't go back the next day to play. Needless to say,he was up and ready the following Monday. On the way into school, Brady exclaimed, "This is going to be the best day ever!" Ms. Shelly and Ms. Kathy did not disappoint, Brady had a blast! His teacher told me that he spent most of the day making an elaborate lego building. That sounds like my Brady!

Brady kept building Cash up telling him, "You'll like school. You can play in the kitchen and you can play with tools and you get a snack." Last month whenever we mentioned school, Cash would automatically scream and yell, "No! Stay home with Mommy!" After having a good time at meet the teacher teacher night Cash was in better spirits about school. We asked him if he liked it and he responded with a quick "Ya" and then we asked him if he wanted to go back and he again said, "Ya." Whew, so I thought! I guess Cash forgot all about that when he got to school this morning. As soon as I kissed him and said "I love you" (I was very careful not to say bye) Cash immediately threw his toy down and began to scream. I came back to try to soothe him and even Ms. Theresa was very sweet and started to play with him to distract him. She sat at the miniature kitchen table and had Cash serve her food. When I tried to leave again, the crying started again. This cycle happened three unsuccessful times. After the third, I knew that I just had to leave or I would only make matters worse. During the parent orientation down the hall I could still hear Cash screaming from his classroom. After 15 minutes lapsed, I left and he was still crying. I noticed the class was lining up to go to music so I sneaked around the corner to watch. I couldn't hear Cash crying anymore so I thought this was a good thing. I saw all the kids pass in the sweet line with Cash as the kaboose only he was being held by Ms. Theresa. I guess he was happy because he thought he was leaving and hoping to go home. Me, being the stalker I am, ran to the other entrance to see what happened. All was good until they walked into the music room and poor Cash began to scream again. Even louder if possible, and crying "Mommy" every now and then. After standing there for a few minutes, I knew nothing was going to change so I left for my own torture pay back session, my dentist appointment. When I went back in the afternoon to pick the boys up I expected the worst. As I walked into the room, I melted. Little Cash was curled up on his nap mat sound asleep like an angel. Ms.Brandy comforted me and said that Cash eventually warmed up after music class. She said when they returned to the classroom and gave him his "lovie" that he hugged it and sat on the floor by himself. All the other kids were sitting at the table eating snacks and he eventually got up to join them. He played construction worker, ate his lunch, and then laid on his nap mat and went right to sleep. After talking to his teacher, I decided to let him sleep a little longer and go get Brady from his class. On the way, I had to literally hold back tears at my sense of relief and comfort that my baby had adjusted to school. Hopefully, Cash remembers he had fun when we go back Thursday so we don't have a repeat breakdown. Please.

Update: Poor Cash has cried every morning I have dropped him off since school began almost two months ago. His sweet teachers say it usually only lasts about 5 minutes then he calms down and has a great time. They say "he's an observer and a very good listener."

Brady's First Day and Cash's Trial Run

Monday, August 30, 2010

Brady had a wonderful first day of school. He's an old pro at this routine and couldn't wait to go back.
To get Cash ready for his first day tomorrow, we practiced sleeping on Cash's new "Hireman" nap mat and puppy pillow. I fully expect this will be the only time silly Cash's eyes will be closed on the nap mat. He usually talks to himself and George about 45 minutes before falling asleep in his bed. Considering this, the new environment, and him having no idea what's going on, I'm sure I'll be picking him up from school before he ever goes to sleep.
Update: Boy, was I proven wrong! Cash has been sound asleep on his nap mat every time I pick him up from school. Good job Cash!
